That figure came from a study whose authors later acknowledged a calculation error. A broader estimate put U.S. data-center-related water use at 228 billion gallons in 2023, but about 211 billion of that was tied to electricity generation, while only 17 billion gallons were used directly to cool servers.

Other sectors use far more water

Even where data centers do consume water, their use remains small compared with agriculture and with other accepted activities such as golf courses. Streaming services and everyday digital use also depend on the same infrastructure often criticized only when linked to AI. In some markets, especially with modern closed-loop cooling systems, direct water consumption can be far lower than headline figures suggest.

The deeper issue is trust and inequality

The backlash is not only about utilities and ecology. Data centers have become a physical symbol of fears that AI will eliminate jobs, concentrate wealth and hand more power to Silicon Valley without clear benefits for ordinary households. The response could be decentralization or exit

One proposed answer is smaller, distributed facilities tied more closely to local economies and able to operate flexibly on the grid. Another is geographic escape: developers are exploring friendlier jurisdictions, including Iceland, the Gulf states, offshore platforms and even space-based computing concepts backed by private capital. That may reduce local resistance, but it also risks creating new geopolitical dependence and further separating the benefits of compute from the populations affected by it.
