Renault Descodes has updated its free local AI voice tool Cast to version 2.1, adding lower-cost duplex voice models and live visual analysis features designed for both professional and personal uses.
renault-dcodes.fr combines open-access discussion forums, curated AI news, shared resources, job and project posts, and a set of free tools focused on artificial intelligence, automation, robotics and development. The site also hosts a paid Club area with training, workshops, guides and private events, but several tools remain freely downloadable.
A promotional operation offered the first month of the Club Renault Descodes free with the code Renault ANIV. The club normally costs 40 euros per month and is presented as a mix of e-learning, workshops, project sharing, networking and ongoing support, with cancellation available at any time.
Among the site’s flagship tools, Kiro is described as a multi-model AI interface installed locally on a user’s computer. It can connect to commercial APIs, open models, OpenRouter, and even locally installed models, while offering role saving, model switching within a conversation and a broader interface than standard consumer chatbots.
Another free utility, Compa, takes the opposite approach from simple “which AI should be used” lists. It presents an interactive map of possible AI use cases by domain, then suggests suitable tools once a user identifies a relevant task. The idea is to expand practical imagination before narrowing down to products.
The latest spotlight falls on Cast 2.1, a free downloadable interface for real-time spoken exchanges with AI. Users can create, export and import custom personas, define tone, memory and behavior, and use them for role-play, language practice, customer support drills, historical simulations or fictional conversations.
Cast is distributed as a ZIP file opened in a browser after extraction, with storage handled locally on the user’s machine rather than on third-party servers. That means no built-in remote database and more control over data, though users can lose stored conversations if their machine fails. The software itself is free, but commercial voice models still incur API charges.
Version 2.1 integrates new duplex voice models from OpenAI and Google, replacing older turn-by-turn behavior in which either the user or the AI could speak, but not both fluidly. Duplex mode lets the AI continue a sentence, react to brief interjections and maintain a more human conversational rhythm.
One highlighted option, GPT Live 1, is presented as cheaper than earlier real-time models and billed roughly by time rather than only by token volume. A cited example puts voice conversation around $0.05 per minute, with extra token costs possible for reasoning or transcription features. Users are encouraged to monitor and cap spending inside the tool.
Cast 2.1 also supports vision-enabled exchanges. With OpenAI, users can send snapshots during a conversation, while Gemini 3.8 Live can process ongoing camera input. That opens use cases such as repair assistance, object identification, training simulations or contextual coaching based on what the AI can see in real time.
The project’s development is closely tied to private community workshops where ideas are tested and prototyped collectively. A contributor named Alan is credited with helping sort feedback and implement updates, including the new duplex and vision functions. The tools are shared freely under an open spirit, with a clear request not to commercialize them.
With Cast 2.1, Kiro and Compa, Renault Descodes is pushing a local-first, community-built approach to AI tools. The update reflects a broader shift toward conversational, multimodal systems that are becoming cheaper, more natural and more practical for everyday work.
