Anthropic has launched Claude Opus 5.5, a new flagship model positioned near Fable 5.1 performance for most tasks while costing less, generating responses faster, and coming with higher usage allowances.
Opus 5.5 became available on September 22 across Claude’s API, web app, and desktop app. The release marks a major update to Anthropic’s top-tier lineup and is being presented as a broader usability upgrade rather than a niche premium option.
Anthropic says Opus 5.5 should deliver performance comparable to Fable 5.1 on most tasks while costing 40% less to run than Opus 5. That pricing claim matters because the biggest criticism of frontier models has been that they are too expensive for frequent, everyday use.
The company also says Opus 5.5 generates outputs 30% faster than Opus 5. But both the speed and cost claims are tied to each model’s default effort settings, and the defaults differ: Opus 5.5 uses medium effort by default, while Opus 5 defaults to high, which naturally raises cost and latency.
That default-setting difference complicates a direct apples-to-apples comparison. The gap could reflect marketing-friendly framing, but it could also signal that Opus 5.5 is efficient enough at medium effort to outperform or match the earlier model even when using fewer resources.
Anthropic says Opus 5.5 communicates more naturally, addressing a long-running complaint that its models can sound dense and overly formal. Early examples show a shift toward clearer, more conversational answers that sound less like generic AI phrasing and more like concise human analysis.
On published benchmarks run with Opus 5.5 at maximum effort, the model reportedly outperforms both Fable 5.1 and GPT6 Astra in coding and knowledge work. It also beats Fable 5.1 in business workflows, computer use, and visual chart recognition, though GPT6 Astra remains ahead in some business workflow evaluations.
In one internal test involving a company website and a difficult-to-find performance report, Opus 5.5 was the only model among Opus 5, Opus 5.5, and Fable 5.1 to successfully locate the material and generate the requested report. In another test on a proposed merger, both Opus 5 and Opus 5.5 performed well, but Opus 5.5 produced a more thorough, easier-to-read report with fewer errors while also being faster and cheaper.
Anthropic is also increasing 5-hour usage limits for Pro, Max, and Team plans. It is adding a banked reset feature that users can trigger when needed, a change aimed at reducing interruptions for heavier users who hit caps during busy work sessions.
Claude Opus 5.5 combines lower operating cost, faster responses, stronger benchmark performance, and higher usage flexibility, making it one of Anthropic’s most important model updates in months. The main open question is whether those gains hold up in like-for-like testing beyond the default settings.
