The US economy added 162,000 jobs in August, more than double expectations

The August payrolls report delivered a clear upside surprise: 162,000 jobs added, unemployment steady at 4.1%, and earlier summer figures revised higher. The result complicates the Federal Reserve’s September debate by shifting attention back from labor-market weakness to inflation risk.

A jobs report that reset the late-summer narrative

The US labor market ended August with a stronger-than-expected burst of hiring, as nonfarm payroll employment rose by 162,000 and the unemployment rate held at 4.1%, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics release issued on Friday, September 4, 2026 . The figure was not merely a mild beat: Axios reported that economists had expected about 53,000 jobs, while the Associated Press cited a FactSet forecast of 65,000, meaning the official result was more than double—and by some measures roughly triple—consensus expectations .

That headline matters because the previous labor-market story had been one of softness. July had initially been reported as a month in which employers cut 23,000 jobs, a striking signal for an economy still wrestling with high costs and interest-rate uncertainty. The August release changed that picture: June payrolls were revised up by 11,000 to 31,000, and July was revised up by 44,000 to a gain of 21,000, leaving the two prior months 55,000 jobs stronger than previously reported . In practical terms, the “summer slowdown” did not disappear, but it now looks less severe than it did a month ago.

The August number also beat the tone set by private payroll data earlier in the week. ADP reported on September 2 that private-sector employment increased by only 38,000 in August, the slowest private-employer pace since January by its measure . That divergence reinforces a familiar rule for interpreting the US labor market: no single release fully captures the economy’s momentum, and the official establishment survey can surprise sharply even after a cautious ADP reading.

Where the jobs came from

The payroll gains were concentrated in a few categories rather than spread evenly across the economy. The Bureau of Labor Statistics said employment increased in food services and drinking places, local government education, manufacturing, and health care, while information lost jobs .

Restaurants and bars were the standout. Food services and drinking places added 59,000 jobs in August, far above the sector’s average monthly gain of 12,000 over the prior 12 months . Local government education added 42,000 positions, largely offsetting a prior-month decline and showing how seasonal adjustment and public-school calendars can create visible swings in monthly education employment . Manufacturing continued an upward trend with a 16,000-job increase, including gains in machinery and fabricated metal products, and factory employment stood 58,000 above its recent December 2025 low . Health care added 13,000 jobs, though that was slower than its average monthly gain of 32,000 over the prior year .

Construction was another area of interest. The BLS described construction employment as little changed, even with a 22,000-job increase, because the month-to-month estimate did not clearly depart from its recent trend; within the sector, nonresidential specialty trade contractors continued to move higher . That distinction is important: a monthly number can be positive without necessarily signaling a new acceleration.

The weak spot was information employment, which fell by 23,000 in August after losses averaging 8,000 per month over the prior 12 months . The BLS identified losses in computing infrastructure providers, data processing, web hosting and related services, publishing, and broadcasting and content providers . That sector-level decline is a reminder that a strong payroll headline can coexist with pressure in industries exposed to restructuring, technology shifts, or changing demand.

The household survey: steady unemployment, more participation

The unemployment rate stayed at 4.1%, and the number of unemployed people changed little at 7.0 million . That stability will likely be read as evidence that the labor market remains close to full employment, but the details add nuance. The labor force participation rate edged up to 61.6% in August, though it remained 0.5 percentage point below its January level . The employment-population ratio was 59.1%, little changed both over the month and since January .

The report also showed some easing in involuntary part-time work. People employed part time for economic reasons fell by 414,000 to 4.4 million; these are workers who would have preferred full-time jobs but were working part time because hours were reduced or full-time work was unavailable . Meanwhile, 5.7 million people outside the labor force said they wanted a job, a number the BLS described as little changed .

These details support a balanced reading. The payroll number says employers added jobs at a meaningful pace in August. The unemployment and participation figures say the labor market did not overheat dramatically. The part-time figure improved, but millions of would-be workers remain outside the formal labor force count. In other words, the report is strong, but not uniformly exuberant.

Wages: still growing, but not racing

Average hourly earnings for all employees on private nonfarm payrolls rose by 10 cents, or 0.3%, to $37.75 in August; over the year, average hourly earnings increased 3.1% . For production and nonsupervisory employees, average hourly earnings rose 11 cents, or 0.3%, to $32.53 . The average workweek edged up by 0.1 hour to 34.4 hours, while manufacturing hours rose to 40.5 .

The wage data are central to how policymakers will interpret the report. A 162,000 payroll gain is strong relative to expectations, but annual wage growth of 3.1% does not by itself scream a wage-price spiral. The Associated Press noted that the 3.1% annual increase was the weakest year-over-year wage gain since May 2021 . That gives both sides of the Federal Reserve debate something to cite: hiring looks resilient, but pay growth appears more contained than in earlier phases of the post-pandemic expansion.

ADP’s pay data added another layer. Its September 2 release said base pay for all private-sector workers rose 3.2% year over year, while gross pay rose 4.7%; job-stayers saw base pay growth of 3.0%, and job-changers saw 4.7% . ADP’s measure is not the same as the BLS average hourly earnings series, but it points to the same broad theme: compensation is still rising, yet not necessarily at the breakneck pace associated with the tightest labor-market periods.

Why the surprise matters for the Federal Reserve

The report lands at an awkward moment for the Federal Reserve. Before the release, the policy debate was already finely balanced. A Kiplinger preview published September 2 said economists expected the August jobs report to show 58,000 new jobs and unemployment at 4.1%, while also noting that ADP’s 38,000 private-payroll gain had come in below expectations . The official result therefore removed one argument for caution: the labor market no longer looks as weak as the July report had suggested.

Axios framed the release as fresh evidence of resilience and noted that the data arrived as Fed officials were considering whether to raise rates later in September, with stubborn inflation their chief concern . AP’s market report drew a similar conclusion, saying the hiring surprise could give the Fed more room to raise its benchmark rate to fight inflation . The link is straightforward: if employment is still expanding and unemployment is low, policymakers may feel less pressure to protect the job market and more freedom to focus on prices.

Still, the August report does not settle the rate question. It raises the stakes for inflation data and for the Fed’s assessment of whether strong job creation reflects healthy supply-side momentum or demand strong enough to keep price pressures alive. The wage figures argue against panic, while the payroll and revision figures argue against complacency.

Markets heard “good news” with a hawkish edge

Financial markets initially treated the jobs surprise as mixed news. AP reported that US stocks mostly fell and Treasury yields rose after the release, with the 10-year Treasury yield around 4.77% and the 2-year yield rising to 4.37% from 4.34% late Thursday . The reason is the familiar “good news is bad news” dynamic: stronger employment supports incomes and spending, but it can also increase the odds of tighter monetary policy.

This is why the August report is more than a labor-market update. It is also a rates story, a bond-market story and, indirectly, a consumer story. A stronger job market can help households manage high prices, but higher yields can also feed into borrowing costs, including mortgages and business credit. For companies, the report suggests demand for workers has not collapsed. For investors, it suggests the Fed may have less reason to turn dovish.

A strong month, not a final verdict

The best reading of the August payrolls report is that it repairs confidence in the labor market without proving that every weakness has vanished. Payrolls grew by 162,000, unemployment stayed at 4.1%, participation improved, and earlier summer numbers were revised higher . At the same time, job growth was concentrated, information employment fell, and the prior 12-month average payroll gain was only 31,000, underscoring that August may be a rebound from a soft patch rather than the start of a boom .

For households, the most important takeaway is that the economy is still creating jobs. For the Fed, the message is more complicated: labor-market weakness is a less persuasive reason to pause, but wage growth does not appear to be accelerating uncontrollably. For markets, the report strengthens the case that September’s policy decision will be driven by whether inflation confirms or contradicts the resilience now visible in the jobs data.

The subject headline is therefore accurate, but it understates the policy significance. The US economy did add 162,000 jobs in August, more than double expectations. The bigger point is that one report shifted the economic conversation—from whether hiring was stalling to whether a still-resilient labor market gives the Federal Reserve room to keep fighting inflation.
