SpaceX market cap hits $2 trillion; lock-up expiry sparks trader speculation
SpaceX is back above the $2 trillion mark, but the story moving traders is not only valuation. A coming Nasdaq-100 rebalance and staggered post-IPO lock-up expirations have created an unusual tug-of-war between forced passive demand and newly tradable share supply.
A $2 trillion stock with a float problem
SpaceX has again crossed the psychological $2 trillion market-cap threshold, putting the company among the largest names in the Nasdaq-100 by total equity value while leaving it with a much smaller index footprint than its headline size would suggest . The reason is not a lack of investor attention; it is the mechanics of free float. Because much of the post-IPO share base remains locked up or held by insiders, Nasdaq-100 weighting rules have not treated the whole market capitalization as fully investable .
That mismatch is now the center of the trade. SpaceX’s current Nasdaq-100 weight has been cited at about 1.25%, ranking it only 19th in the benchmark despite its more than $2 trillion market value and its position near the top of the index by capitalization . As additional restricted shares become eligible to trade, the free-float ratio rises, and that can mechanically lift the company’s index weight .
The result is a setup that looks counterintuitive: the same lock-up expirations that may add selling pressure can also create index-driven buying. In other words, more unlocked shares could mean more supply, but they can also make SpaceX a larger mandatory holding for funds and ETFs tracking the Nasdaq-100 .
Why the Nasdaq-100 rebalance matters
The next key date is the Nasdaq-100 quarterly rebalancing, with changes expected to take effect before the market opens on September 21, 2026 . Index-tracking funds typically need to adjust before the effective date, with one report noting expected positioning around the September 18 close . For a company as large and closely watched as SpaceX, those dates have become trading events in their own right.
JPMorgan strategists have estimated that a higher Nasdaq-100 weighting could produce a large wave of passive buying. One set of figures cited in recent reporting puts the potential move from 1.25% to about 1.51%, implying roughly $12.4 billion of passive net buying . Another report, also citing JPMorgan estimates, described a possible jump to 2.25%, which would imply about $15.5 billion in passive demand from index funds and ETFs .
The difference between the $12.4 billion and $15.5 billion estimates appears to come from the assumed final index weight, but the direction is the same: as SpaceX’s float expands, more passive capital may be forced to own the stock . That is why traders are watching not just the share price, but the precise float count used in index calculations .
The scale matters because about $1.7 trillion in exposure has been reported as linked to the Nasdaq-100, including products such as the Invesco QQQ Trust . Even a small change in SpaceX’s weight can therefore translate into billions of dollars of demand .
The unlock schedule becomes the market’s calendar
The lock-up schedule is the other side of the equation. About 911.5 million SpaceX shares became eligible for trading on August 6, followed by another 319 million on August 20, according to reporting cited in the latest market coverage . Those unlocks occurred before Nasdaq’s August 31 reference date for the September rebalance, which is why they are central to this month’s weighting debate .
More supply is still ahead. Reports citing the lock-up timeline say more than 1 billion additional shares are set to become eligible by the end of October, followed by roughly 1.3 billion more after third-quarter earnings in mid-November . That would bring the next major wave of potential tradable supply to more than 2.3 billion shares .
The important word is “eligible.” A lock-up expiry does not force insiders or early investors to sell; it only gives them the ability to do so . That distinction explains why the first unlock did not automatically produce the feared collapse. Recent coverage noted that the initial August unlocking raised concerns about heavy selling, but most insiders appeared to hold, and the expected selling pressure did not fully materialize .
For traders, however, the risk has not disappeared. The next unlocks are larger in aggregate, and each new tranche changes both market supply and index math . That combination is what makes SpaceX’s fourth quarter potentially volatile.
Passive buying versus insider selling
The bull case is mechanical. If the Nasdaq-100 raises SpaceX’s weight, passive funds tracking the benchmark must buy the stock, regardless of whether portfolio managers believe the valuation is attractive . In this scenario, index demand becomes a temporary but powerful buyer of last resort, absorbing shares that insiders or early holders may choose to sell .
The bear case is also mechanical. If newly eligible holders decide to sell aggressively, the market may have to digest billions of additional shares over a short period . Passive buying can cushion that pressure, but it may not fully offset it if supply arrives faster than index demand .
That is why recent analyst and market commentary has focused less on SpaceX’s long-term space business and more on the plumbing of market structure. River Wealth Advisors CEO Ed O’Gorman was cited as saying that passive buying can move market prices, while Interactive Brokers chief strategist Steve Sosnick noted that newly unlocked shares could either be sold into expected passive demand or pushed higher by that same demand . This is the essence of the current speculation: whether the coming unlocks become a distribution event, a forced-buying squeeze, or both.
Why a rally is not guaranteed
Index flows are powerful, but they are not magic. One report noted that when SpaceX joined the Nasdaq-100 in July, JPMorgan estimated the inclusion would generate about $4.3 billion of passive buying, yet the stock fell more than 6% on its first day in the index . That episode is a warning against assuming that forced buying always produces a clean rally.
There are several reasons. First, traders often front-run index events, buying before passive funds must act and then selling into the rebalance . Second, passive demand may already be partly reflected in the stock price if the market has been discussing the catalyst for weeks . Third, lock-up expirations can shift psychology: even if insiders do not sell immediately, the knowledge that they can sell may cap enthusiasm .
SpaceX’s recent trading range has reinforced that uncertainty. One report described the stock as having moved narrowly in recent weeks, while another noted that it had climbed back above the $135 IPO price as the rebalance approached . That leaves bulls and bears arguing over whether the stock is consolidating before a new index-driven leg higher or merely waiting for the next supply shock.
What investors are really pricing
The current debate is less about whether SpaceX is important and more about who must own it, when, and at what price. Active investors can decide whether they like the company’s valuation. Passive funds cannot make that judgment if the benchmark weight rises . Employees and early backers can decide whether to monetize newly unlocked shares. Retail traders can attempt to anticipate both groups.
That creates a rare three-way market structure. Passive buyers may be price-insensitive near the rebalance; insiders may be price-sensitive after lock-ups expire; and short-term traders may try to arbitrage the calendar . The share price will reflect the balance among those groups.
Prediction-market interest has also reflected that uncertainty. Recent coverage reported divided views on SpaceX’s month-end valuation, with traders split among ranges below, around and above the $2 trillion area . That dispersion is consistent with a stock whose near-term path depends as much on flows as on fundamentals .
The key dates ahead
The immediate catalyst is the September Nasdaq-100 rebalance, expected to take effect before the September 21 open . Before then, traders will focus on the final implied weighting, the size of passive buying, and whether active investors sell ahead of index funds . After that, attention should shift to the next unlocks: more than 1 billion shares by the end of October and about 1.3 billion after mid-November third-quarter earnings .
Those dates frame what traders are calling the next act for SpaceX and related space stocks. If passive inflows absorb supply, the $2 trillion valuation may become a floor rather than a ceiling. If insiders sell heavily and index demand proves insufficient, the same lock-up expirations that increased SpaceX’s benchmark weight could become an overhang.
For now, SpaceX’s return to a $2 trillion market cap has made the company too large for index investors to ignore but still too supply-constrained for its index weight to fully match its size . That gap is the trade. The next few weeks will test whether mechanical buying can overcome the market’s oldest force: shareholders newly free to sell.
