Dario Amodei Urges Slowing AI Development to Avoid 'Catastrophic' Risks

Dario Amodei’s latest intervention lands with unusual force because it comes from the chief executive of Anthropic, one of the companies most directly involved in building the frontier systems he wants slowed. Amodei’s warning was amplified by Anthropic’s own September 10 threat-intelligence report, which said the company had identified and disrupted attempts to use Claude for malicious activity across cyber operations, influence operations, surveillance, scams and fraud, biological misuse, conventional weapons development and illicit distillation . The company said the activity it disrupted covered the period from December 2025 through August 2026 . Anthropic said it had seen actors use Claude in connection with conventional weapons development, including software related to guided rockets, drone swarms and targeting systems, and said it had banned accounts and shared threat information with public- and private-sector partners where appropriate . Axios reported that a letter circulated among House members urged Speaker Mike Johnson to bring the House back immediately and keep it in session until Congress advanced bipartisan AI safeguards . The contradiction critics will emphasize

Amodei’s call will not be accepted at face value by everyone. Axios reported that critics suggested the essay could be read as a bid to concentrate power among large frontier labs rather than a purely altruistic safety plan . That criticism will be hard to avoid because the companies warning most loudly about catastrophic risk are often the same companies raising money, building data centers and racing for frontier advantage.

The tension is real. If Anthropic believes AI could become dangerous quickly, why continue building at the frontier at all? What to watch next

Three tests will determine whether this becomes a turning point or another cycle of alarm. First, Anthropic must show what real authority its embedded third-party evaluators will have, how independent they will be, and what they can publish when they disagree with the company . Second, other frontier labs will have to decide whether to adopt similar outside scrutiny or dismiss Amodei’s proposal as self-serving. Third, Congress and the White House must decide whether to move beyond hearings, voluntary frameworks and general statements toward enforceable rules.

For now, Amodei has put a clear proposition on the table: frontier AI is moving too fast for existing safeguards, and the solution is not simply more safety research alongside faster capability development. It is to slow the capability race itself, at least enough for evaluation, alignment, interpretability, cybersecurity and democratic deliberation to catch up . Whether the industry can accept that discipline before a major failure forces it on them is now the question.
