TL;DR

Gotion High-Tech has set a rare public benchmark for solid-state battery costs at $150 per kWh, a price far above LFP cells today but potentially viable for premium long-range electric vehicles if production and durability targets are met.

KEY POINTS

A rare public price signal

Solid-state battery pricing has largely remained undisclosed across the industry, making Gotion High-Tech’s published target of $150 per kWh notable. The figure offers one of the clearest benchmarks yet for assessing whether the technology can move from demonstration projects into commercial electric vehicles. It also suggests that solid-state cells may arrive sooner in higher-end segments than in budget models.

Backed by Volkswagen

Gotion High-Tech, a Chinese battery manufacturer whose largest shareholder is Volkswagen, has been developing its Gemstone all-solid-state battery as a next-generation product. The company is positioning the chemistry around three goals: higher energy density, improved safety, and scalable manufacturing. Its links to Volkswagen and references to Audi put it close to major potential automotive customers, though deployment timing remains uncertain.

How the battery differs

The Gemstone battery uses a fully solid electrolyte rather than the liquid electrolyte found in conventional lithium-ion cells. That change can improve packaging flexibility and reduce fire risk while allowing higher energy density. It also creates new engineering challenges, including interface resistance, cracking in brittle materials, and the possibility of lithium dendrites in some designs.

Energy density claims

In 2024, Gotion unveiled a solid-state cell with energy density of about 350 Wh/kg, roughly 40% above conventional NMC lithium-ion cells. The company says its next-generation target is 400 Wh/kg. Those figures would allow automakers either to cut battery weight for the same capacity or to increase range without proportionally larger packs.

Pilot manufacturing progress

The company has completed a pilot production line with designed annual capacity of 0.2 GWh and says product qualification rates have exceeded 90%. That marks progress beyond laboratory development, but it does not amount to full industrial commercialization. Scaling from a pilot line to mass production remains one of the hardest steps for solid-state batteries.

Cost versus LFP

At $150 per kWh, Gotion’s target is still far above the roughly $55 to $60 per kWh often cited for LFP battery cells. On a 75 kWh battery, the cell cost would be about $11,250 for solid-state versus roughly $4,125 to $4,500 for LFP. That premium makes the technology difficult to justify for mainstream low-cost EVs at current targets.

Why automakers may still pay more

Higher cell energy density can improve vehicle efficiency and extend range, especially in larger or premium EVs where buyers accept higher prices for better performance. Better thermal behavior and reduced fire risk could also lower engineering compromises elsewhere in the vehicle. Those benefits may offset part of the cell-cost gap in luxury and long-range models before they do in mass-market cars.

Raw materials remain a major hurdle

The battery uses a sulfide-based solid electrolyte, with lithium sulfide identified as a key cost driver. Gotion plans to produce lithium sulfide in-house to improve supply stability and reduce costs as output rises. Even so, raw-material prices, refining complexity, and clean-room manufacturing requirements could keep solid-state batteries expensive for years.

Commercial timing and industry reality

Initial applications are being targeted around 2027, with larger-scale production goals by 2030. That timeline reflects the wider industry’s slow progress: many companies still remain in testing, and even Toyota, despite years of announcements and thousands of patents, has yet to deliver solid-state batteries in mass-market vehicles. Tesla, by contrast, continues to prioritize conventional lithium-ion improvements rather than a full shift to solid-state designs.

CONCLUSION

Gotion’s $150 per kWh target gives the industry a concrete measure for judging solid-state battery commercialization. The technology is promising, but its future now depends less on headline specifications than on whether manufacturers can deliver durable, scalable, and materially affordable production.
