Moonshot AI has launched Kimi K3.1 Pro, a 3 trillion-parameter-class model with a 1 million-token context window that is posting near-frontier performance in coding, agents, 3D generation and finance at sharply lower prices, with open weights expected on November 4.
Kimi K3.1 Pro is positioned as Moonshot AI’s most capable model yet and one of the strongest open-weight contenders to challenge leading proprietary systems. Its combination of scale, long context and low cost is notable because models in this class have typically remained closed. The release suggests open-weight systems are moving closer to the top tier of commercial AI.
On Terminal Bench 4.0, Kimi K3.1 Pro scored 65.7%, ahead of GPT-6 Astra at 58.2% and just behind Claude Opus 5.5 at 66.4%. Across 14 reported benchmarks, it reportedly beat Opus 5.5 in 9 and Astra in about 10. On SWE Marathon, it reached 51.7, compared with 46.3 for Opus and 42.5 for Astra.
The model posted leading results on Office QA Pro v2 and Spreadsheet Bench 2, outperforming systems including Claude Opus 5.5, Fable 5.1 and GPT-6 Astra. That matters because spreadsheet work, financial modeling and audit-style analysis are core enterprise tasks. A showcased 114-page institutional-style report on quantum computing included charts, forecasts and traceable citations tied to primary-source figures.
On the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index, the model debuted in fourth place with a score of 55, a strong showing for an open agentic model. Pricing is set at $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens, with cached input priced at $0.20 per million. The model is also described as launching at roughly two-thirds the price of K3, while remaining far cheaper than leading proprietary rivals.
Kimi K3.1 Pro Highspeed was released alongside the main model, offering two to three times the speed of the standard version. That matters for interactive coding, agent loops and design workflows where latency often determines usability. The focus on both cost and throughput points to a push beyond benchmark prestige into everyday deployment.
The model showed particular strength in front-end and browser-based coding tasks. Demonstrations included a Canva-like editor, animated landing pages, and fully coded game-style experiences rendered in the browser. In one comparison, output quality was described as similar to much costlier frontier models while being as much as 80% cheaper than Astra in some web development scenarios.
Kimi K3.1 Pro appears especially competitive in 3D modeling, SVG generation and spatial tasks. On BenchCAD, it scored 92.7%, close to Opus 5.5 at 96.2% and Astra at 95.9%. In side-by-side tests, it produced a more natural horse animation than rival models and completed an animated voxel pagoda island in 15 minutes for $5.71, versus 32 minutes and $17.13 for Opus.
The model is positioned for use with Blender, Unreal Engine, coding tools and CAD software. One example involved an animated foldable-phone replica built in Blender and turned into an interactive webpage in about 1 hour 30 minutes for $12.50. These results suggest the system is moving beyond text generation into practical multimodal production pipelines.
Despite the gains, the model is not dominant across every category. In a robotics benchmark tied to real-world physical tasks, it scored just 9%, reflecting broader industry weakness in embodied reasoning. Even where it approaches Opus 5.5 and Astra, performance is still uneven in some complex agentic coding and reasoning tasks.
Kimi K3.1 Pro marks a significant step for open-weight AI by narrowing the gap with leading closed models in several commercially important domains. Its main significance lies in showing that near-frontier performance in coding, 3D work and financial analysis is becoming available at much lower cost.
