Google Sheets Canvas uses Gemini to turn spreadsheet data into interactive, no-code apps such as Kanban boards, dashboards, word clouds, and calendar views that stay synced with the underlying sheet.
Sheets Canvas adds a side panel in Google Sheets where users can describe what they want in plain language. Instead of building formulas, charts, or layouts manually, users can ask Gemini to generate a visualization or app directly from the sheet’s existing data. The feature is aimed at speeding up analysis and making spreadsheet workflows accessible to people without advanced spreadsheet skills.
A task list can be converted into an interactive Kanban board with aggregated metrics. The board organizes work by status and allows items to be moved between columns, such as from design to logistics. Changes made in the visual board update the underlying spreadsheet instantly, keeping the app and the source data synchronized.
Gemini can also build a full dashboard from spreadsheet data, including interactive filters, toggles, and scorecards. The resulting interface is tailored to the structure of the data set rather than being a generic template. This allows teams to explore business data more quickly and make decisions without building a dashboard component by component.
Survey responses can be transformed into an interactive word cloud that highlights recurring themes. Selecting a word such as complete, recommend, or improvement reveals the related underlying comments immediately. That creates a faster path from large volumes of text feedback to the specific responses behind common patterns.
Marketing schedules can be displayed in a monthly calendar layout with entries color-coded by platform. This gives teams a quick view of campaign distribution across the month and across channels. If a launch date is changed in the calendar, the corresponding spreadsheet data updates automatically.
The feature is positioned not only for traditional analysis but also for more creative uses, including gamified trackers and other custom workflow views. That flexibility suggests Sheets Canvas is meant to function as a lightweight app layer inside Google Sheets, rather than only as a charting tool. It expands spreadsheets from static grids into interactive interfaces for day-to-day operations.
Existing canvases can be modified later through an edit control, allowing users to add or adjust components without rebuilding from scratch. Completed canvases can be shared in the same way as other Google Sheets files. They also retain the governance and sharing controls associated with Google Workspace, which is important for teams handling operational or business data.
Sheets Canvas pushes Google Sheets beyond static analysis by letting users create interactive, data-linked tools with natural-language prompts. Its main value lies in turning familiar spreadsheets into shareable business apps without requiring code or advanced spreadsheet expertise.
