Elon Musk outlined a joint Tesla-SpaceX chip-manufacturing push in Austin to reduce dependence on Taiwan and hinted at even deeper corporate ties as collaboration between the two companies expands.
Musk said the main trigger for Terrafab was concern that advanced chips from Taiwan might one day become unavailable. He framed that risk as severe enough to threaten operations if supply were disrupted. The effort is also meant to address a broader capacity crunch in semiconductor manufacturing, where existing fabs are already near full utilization.
Demand is not limited to data centers. Musk said future scaling will require chips for server infrastructure, cars and humanoid robots, making current industry output insufficient for long-term ambitions. In his view, the choice is essentially to build new manufacturing capacity or accept a ceiling on growth.
A research fab is being built at Giga Texas in Austin as a collaboration between Tesla and SpaceX. Musk described the project as the “crawl” stage of a “crawl, walk, run” strategy, with equipment already on order. He said the team could produce “something useful” by the end of next year, though not yet at meaningful scale.
The companies are already working on chip packaging, which executives described as a critical weak point in the current supply chain. Packaging capacity was characterized as extremely tight, meaning even successfully designed chips can face delays before deployment. That makes packaging one of the most practical places to begin vertical integration.
Musk acknowledged the project is still early and experimental, saying the first challenge is simply to prove the team can manufacture anything at all. He stressed that the companies have not previously run a fab line and are still learning how the equipment and processes work. Timelines beyond the initial R&D phase remain uncertain.
Musk also briefly addressed the next Tesla Roadster, suggesting a version using cold gas thrusters remains part of the concept. He pointed to October 1 for a reveal or demonstration, while cautioning that excitement is guaranteed but success is not. The remarks reinforced expectations that the vehicle is being positioned as a halo product rather than a high-volume model.
Asked why Tesla and SpaceX still exist as separate companies, Musk did not dismiss the idea of combining them. Instead, he pointed to extensive collaboration, overlap in management and close coordination “in so many areas,” while avoiding a direct commitment. That answer is likely to intensify speculation about whether a future merger could be considered.
Even with strong operational ties, any formal merger would require substantial approvals and would not depend on executive signaling alone. Such a transaction would likely need a detailed proposal, shareholder support and regulatory review. The strategic logic may be clearer as chip, AI and manufacturing plans converge, but execution would be far more complex than the public hint suggested.
The immediate story is a joint semiconductor push by Tesla and SpaceX to secure future AI and robotics growth. The bigger question now is whether that collaboration remains operational or eventually becomes corporate.
