In Europe, shorter distances between ports, logistics centers, and borders reduce the benefit of carrying several extra tonnes of batteries. Tesla announces an unladen weight of about 9,100 kg, a crucial factor in preserving freight capacity. In road transport, every kilo devoted to the battery is a kilo that does not generate revenue through cargo.

Industrial ramp-up in the United States

The manufacturer is building a factory in Nevada capable of producing up to 50,000 trucks per year. At that scale, the Semi would shift from a pilot program to a mass-market product able to make a real impact on the heavy-truck market. European production could eventually be located at Giga Berlin, but no precise timeline has been confirmed.

Still more than 1,000 horsepower

Despite the more modest range, the European version keeps three rear electric motors delivering about 800 kW, or more than 1,000 horsepower. This surplus power is not meant to turn the truck into a performance vehicle, but to ensure quick acceleration, strong hill-climbing ability, and stable speed under heavy load.

Operating results already well advanced

In the United States, the Semi fleet has reportedly already accumulated about 13.5 million miles. One unit is said to have exceeded 440,000 miles, while Tesla claims an availability rate close to 95%. For carriers, this figure is critical: a truck that is out of service generates no revenue, whatever its technical specs.

Less powerful charging, but potentially more rational

The European system tops out at 800 kW, compared with 1.2 MW for the American Mega Charger. On paper, that is a step back. In practice, Tesla says it can recover 60% of the battery in 30 minutes, or about 330 km of range, a level consistent with European drivers’ mandatory rest breaks.

Infrastructure designed to reduce costs

By limiting maximum power, Tesla could simplify network deployment with lower needs for transformers, grid connections, and heavy equipment. The group also plans a 120 kW depot charger, able to restore 60% of range in about 4 hours. For fleets on fixed routes, overnight depot charging may be enough and can reduce dedicated refueling stops.

A design revised for Europe

The truck adopts a shape more compatible with the European road environment, with redesigned exterior mirrors and a front end different from the American version. The long aerodynamic nose of the original model had to be adjusted to better handle roundabouts, tight access points, and length constraints. The goal is to improve visibility, maneuverability, and urban integration.

A modern cab, but no sleeper

The cabin keeps the central driving position, large screens, acoustic glazing, reinforced insulation, and enough space to stand upright. This comfort is an asset for daily operations. However, the lack of a true sleeper cab currently limits the Semi to regional routes, depot shuttles, and fixed-schedule missions.

Competition already well established

Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, MAN, Scania, DAF, and Renault already sell electric heavy trucks in Europe, with service networks and financing solutions. The Mercedes eActros 600 claims about 500 km of range with a 600 kWh battery, putting Tesla in the race without any overwhelming advantage. The possible rollout of supervised FSD could become a differentiator, provided it proves itself on safety, regulation, and real-world use.

CONCLUSION

With a more compact Semi, less extreme on range and designed for regional logistics, Tesla is adapting its push to European realities. The real test will now concern operating costs, the charging network, and the group’s ability to compete with manufacturers already firmly established.
